Head Instructor
Prof. Stickel has been involved in martial arts for most of his life, and
has studied Brazilian jiu-jitsu for over 18 years. His training began
during the early days of Gracie jiu-jitsu in America, when Rickson,
Royler, Rorion and Royce first introduced the art form away from their
native Brazil. Prof. Stickel trained at the Gracie Academy in Torrance,
California, under these masters, who have each become legends in
their own right.
He then moved to San Diego with his master Nelson Monteiro, where
they opened the first jiu jitsu academy in the area. Prof.Marcelo
Pereira, currently the instructor at this facility, joined shortly thereafter.
In 1997 Prof. Stickel returned home to Alaska and began teaching in
Anchorage.
Prof. Stickel was awarded his black belt by Professor Monteiro,
certified as a Gracie jiu jitsu instructor and awarded his first degree by
Master Carlos Gracie Jr the head of Gracie Barra.
Prof. Stickel has a black belt in Kung Fu San Soo from Master Ted
Sias.
In 1996, and again in 2000, Prof. Stickel was invited to train at the
prestigious Abu Dhabi Combat Club in the United Arab Emirates.
Some of the best jiu-jitsu practioners and grapplers in the world come
to this club to study. Prof. Stickel also traveled to Brazil to attend the
Gracie Barra Academy, home to many world champion jiu-jitsu fighters.
In 2001, Prof. Stickel competed in the Pan American Championships,
earning a gold and silver medal.
Prof. Stickel currently trains fighters in Brazilian jiu-jitsu, and mixed
martial arts.
Gracie Barra is well known for producing top fighters in sport BJJ and
MMA and Prof. Stickel strives to maintain high standards of instruction
preparing his students for any level of competition.
Students under Prof. Stickel have competed in most major BJJ
tournaments and have brought home Medals from the Worlds, Pan
Am's, U.S open. Under his guidance Gracie Barra Alaska students
continue to represent the academy in top tournaments often winning
gold and silver medals.
Gracie Barra Alaska team fighters actively compete in local and
National MMA tournaments.
Prof. Stickel has had students fight in the UFC, the pinnacle of Mixed
Martial Arts.
Gracie Barra team fighters hold championship belts in the Heavy
Weight, Light Heavy Weight and Middle Weight divisions of the Alaska
fighting Championships.
In addition to a core of BJJ training Prof. Stickel employs top experts in
striking and various grappling diciplines assuring Gracie Barra Alaska
fighters are given the tools in order to compete and win in the ever
evolving arena of MMA style tournaments.
Prof. Stickel works closely with local law enforcement teaching
defensive tactics.
He has trained Military personnel including, Navy seals, Air force para
rescue and former Delta Force members.
Prof. Stickel is the only certifed Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu Black Belt Instructor
in the state of Alaska.
He continues to improve his teaching techniques by attending
national and international seminars as well as continuing his own
personal development of the art of Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu, which he has
dedicated his life.
